High Pressure Die Casting (HPDC)

High Pressure Die Casting (HPDC) is a manufacturing process used to produce metal parts with high precision and excellent surface finish. Here’s a brief overview of the process:
1. Mold Preparation: The die, typically made of hardened steel, is cleaned and lubricated to ensure proper temperature regulation and easy removal of the final product.
2. Injection: Molten metal (usually aluminum, magnesium, or zinc) is injected into the die cavity under high pressure using a piston or plunger. This ensures the metal fills all intricate details of the mold.
3. Cooling and Solidification: The metal cools and solidifies quickly within the die, forming the desired shape.
4. Ejection: Once solidified, the die halves are separated, and the casting is ejected using ejector pins.
5. Trimming and Finishing: Excess material (flash) is trimmed, and additional finishing processes like machining or polishing may be applied to achieve the final product specifications.

2. Metal Injection: Molten metal is drawn into the mold cavity from a holding furnace below it. Unlike HPDC, the metal is not forced in with high pressure but rather allowed to flow under low pressure (usually 0.1-1 bar).
3. Filling and Solidification: The controlled pressure allows the molten metal to fill the die cavity smoothly, reducing turbulence and minimizing defects. The metal then cools and solidifies in the mold.
4. Ejection: Once the metal solidifies, the die halves are opened, and the casting is ejected.
5. Trimming and Finishing: Any excess material (such as runners or risers) is trimmed off, and additional finishing processes (e.g., heat treatment, machining) may be applied to achieve the final part specifications.
